Climate change impacts on Australian Rangelands

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The recent IPCC Fourth Assessment report concluded that Australia has significant vulnerability to the changes in temperature and rainfall projected under climate change (Hennessy et al. 2007). Agriculture and natural resources were two of the key sectors identified as likely to be affected strongly. Extensive grazing is by far the most widespread agricultural land use in Australia. Most of the country is unsuitable for intensive agricultural production and is used instead for low intensity production of beef and sheep (meat and wool). The grazing industry has been an important contributor to the overall economic growth of Australia, but has also been vulnerable to the impacts of a variable climate (Campbell 1958; Anderson 1991). Climate change will likely add to and exacerbate existing pastoral management challenges such as declines in pasture productivity, reduced forage quality, livestock heat stress, greater problems with some pests and weeds, more frequent droughts, more intense rainfall events, and greater risks of soil erosion (Hennessy et al. 2007).

Influencing adaptation processes on the Australian rangelands for social and ecological resilience

Resource users require the capacity to cope and adapt to climate changes affecting resource condition if they, and their industries, are to remain viable. Understanding individual-scale responses to a changing climate will be an important component of designing well-targeted, broad-scale strategies and policies. Because of the interdependencies between people and ecosystems, understanding and s...

مدل‌سازی اثر تغییر اقلیم بر انتشار دی‌اکسیدکربن خاک در مراتع خشک (جنوب ایران)

Introduction: Carbon stored in soils particularly in arid rangelands soils is the most significant carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems. In arid rangelands, Soils have special places in both carbon sequestration and mitigate global warming. Therefore, any small change in the soil organic carbon (SOC) leads to a significant impact on the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Studies have shown t...

Climate Change Impact on Quality of Life Indicators of Pastoralists (Case study: Rangelands of Haraz River Basin, Mazandaran province, Iran)

Climate changes pose great threats to the main services of ecosystems such as food security, water security and health. This research was carried out in Haraz river basin rangelands, Mazandaran province in the north of Iran in 2015-2017 to analyze the perspectives of Haraz river basin (HRB) pastoralists about climate change. From 5236 local pastoralists, the sample size was consisted of 350 one...

The potential impact of climate change on the Australian wool industry by 2030

By 2030, climate change is likely to have implications for the Australian wool industry, principally through effects on forage and water resources, land carrying capacity and sustainability, animal health, and competition with other sectors, in particular cropping. The nature and scale of these impacts will vary between the wool growing regions, depending on the manifestation of the climate cha...
